1942 H wiring questions

Our H didn"t have the little gauge pod on it when we got it, so I bought a used on for it. I"d like to get a wiring harness for it and get it wired like it should be. There are several different harnesses listed for the H, how do I figure out which one I need? Also, please decipher the letters on the gauge/switch pod. It has four letters, but I"m not sure how it works exactly. Thanks for your help.

if your light switch has 4 positions when you turn it, it will be l, h, d, b. low, high (referes to charge rate) and d and b. dim and bright on the headlamps. that switch was used with the cut out relay instead of the voltage regulator. case i-h sells a regulator that retro fits the cutout relay, there are instructions that come with it to bypass the resistor in the lamp switch. the harness will either be for the regulator that mounts on the genny, or the one on the steering post.

When you say wire as it should be do you mean restore or so it works properly.

If you want to make it factory then go with the cut-out switch.
If you are going to use this tractor then I would take glennsters advice and install a vr. You will be a lot happier, in my opinion.

I have rewired enough cobbled up wiring jobs to know that in my opinion it is easiest to take every wire off the tractor and start over and do it right. Letter series tractors are very simple to wire. Use a good simple diagram like Bob M offers on his site.

I just put all new wire set on both my H and my SMTA. I got them from Agri-Services. They are wiring harness specialty house. The sets are totally like original, color coded. They send a nice install sheet, and have all the wire ends number coded with removable paper tabs. A ten year old can rewire using them.
They also have those little spring loaded wires that go from the bulb to the housing in the lights. The ones that are always twisted in half.
A little spendy, but I think it's the only way to fly.

You can mke your own harness,it is easy an simple to make your own.I made new ones for my 1939 H an ca a llis chalmers.They are just like factory. Thanks;

How would I know where the regulator is? Silly question, I know. To make this work reliably, should I switch to the voltage regulator then? What"s the involve?

One thing that everyone seems to have missed here is the fact that it is highly possible that the H in question never had a guage pod on it in the first place. A standard issue H Farmall had a magneto ignition and a hand crank to start the engine. The electric starter, generator, lights, and battery were all optional, extra cost accessories. The only two guages that were installed at the factory were the oil pressure guage, and the temperature indicator. The ammeter and the ammeter box were part of the optional battery and lights package.
