I put a motor in my 140 that came off of another tractor. I timmed it out by getting #1 at top and setting the distributor and rotary button according. When I try to crank it it backfires through the carb. what should I check next. thanks in advance.

Your probably 180 out and its fireing on the exaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. You can fix it by turning the motor over one more time till number one is top dead and then set the roter button.

I think If its firing on the exhaust stroke it will bang on down the exhaust pipe not through the carb because the inlet valve should be closed? MTF

Chuck: Here is what you may have done, rather than being off 180 degrees, you installed the plug wires wrong way around the distributor, 1 and 4 are correct, 2 and 3 are crossed. I did that once in a hurry, they don't work very well, and they do backfire through the carb.
