H stuck in 5th

Guy selling an H, says stuck in 5th. Can push clutch in, will roll. Dies when tries to drive it in 5th. What should I ask him, or am I being hood winked?? I asked if he tried to move the shifting forks, not gotten back with me yet!! Thanks experts- Steve --still learning!!!

It is likely stuck two gears. The shifter needs to be removed, and the shifting rails aligned to neutral. Then reinstall shifter in the N position it should work. This is a common problem with these old jewels. They can be rebuilt to work right.

I thought it might be stuck it two gears also, but if it is stuck in two gears, I don't think it would roll when the clutch is disengaged.

You have a good point there. I must have missed that part. Wouldn't know until I tore the top off in that case to see what was going on.
