Brake drum on Farmall H

OK .. my brake job on the '42 Farmall H is proceeding. Got the drum and seal off one side. Can't remove the drum from the other side. It's funny; the drum I was able to remove had three large holes caste in it .. the one I'm trying to remove has only two. I wonder which is the original? OK .. so how do I remove that second drum? It seems that it may be rusted fast. Any suggestions? The brake job can't proceed until I get that drum free? Help.

Make sure all linkage is loose to the brake system and get a screwdriver under the edge and gently pry it away, alternating sides as you go.You can't replace just one side. No good will come from that...Get some PB Blaster or WD40 and shoot it under the gap.You won't hurt anything you don't have to replace...It'll happen, just take your time.

You make it sound so easy. I've been trying the Blaster and WD40 routine without much luck. Will keep at it though. What about the cork washer that lies under the bolt - do you know of a source for that? Thanks for your help.

one of my m's had a drum frozen to the shaft. i had a brake drum puller for doing automotive drums that rust to the axle. its not a heavy duty puller, kind of a light weight 3 jaw puller, i think i got it from napa, kd makes them. anyway, set it up on the drum, apply some tension, spray it up, then give the center bolt on the puller a whack or two with a hammer. i applied some heat from a propane torch to the drum, sprayed and repeated. took about a week to break it loose. leave the puller on with tension on it.

I have gotten the cork washers for the M brake drums from the IH dealer. I suppose if they have them for the M they will also have them for an H. I think you could also easily make them from some cork gasket material you can get at tha automotive store. You need those washers, otherwise the transmission oil will leak through the splines of the brake drum, past the drum retainer washer and foul up your linings again.
