Today was fire up the H after a two year rebuild /restoration. I've had two single loud backfires.
Distributor unit off. Cranked engine until first of the double marks on crank pulley was on the pointer. Rotated dist drive until that little resistance felt at number one, then alligned the shaft with the two drive slots, and installed dist. Got the loud backfire.
Where doI go from here? My H manual only discusses the Mag installation. But assume the procedure in the SMTA manual is appropriate.

You are probably one crankshaft turn off, at the top of #1's exhaust stroke, rather than at TDC of it's compression stroke. Turn the engine one turn, then put the distributor back in the position you have it now.

No, it would be a full revolution. The distributor drive slot turns at crankshaft speed. There is additional reduction in the distributor to have 1 revolution of the rotor for every two of the crankshaft. If you only go 180, either the no. 2 plug or the no. 3 plug will fire when no. 1 comes up on compression depending on which way you've turned the drive.

Take distributor off and turn the drive oposite of what it is, with the slot to drive it, you only can put it in 2 ways, correct or 180 out.
