H Starter Switch

No-start on H - only has switch in between battery and starter. Jumped the starter post to + on the battery and it started right up. Voltmeter shows 13 with the push-pull switch pulled out (I'm sorry, I don't know what it's called) but drops to 0 when I press the starter switch. I've seen posts about disassembly and cleaning up the contacts on a starter switch. Might that be the next course of action? How hard is that to do? What's involved?

TIA

First check the battery connection, and battery cable for corrosion and grief especially the posts, and ground strap to the tractor. I think that is the problem.

Next Check Volts from lead post to lead post on the battery while someone hits the start button. (be safe in neutral clutch down brakes on)
If the battery volts go to zero the battery is bad.
Next check at the terminals (that are attached to the posts) from terminal to terminal.
Of it drops to zero, the connection is bad.
Next check from a good ground to the eyelet on the end of the bat cable going to the start switch. If the volts go to zero, it is a bad cable internally.
Next to the battery post of the start sw to ground (that which the eyelet is attached with)
if it goes to zero, that is a faulty connection.
Next check the other side of the switch to ground If it stays at zero, it is the sw.
Next the starter lead from the SW. if to Xero, that terminal is corroded.
Loosen the starter and wiggle it next then tighten (they jamb some times). JimN

Thanks! I cleaned and re-tightened the battery post connections so, I don't think they are the case and the cables are fairly new. It's great to have such a detailed series of tests for all the rest. I'll try to get to them soon and post the results here.

Old starter switches usually have poor looking insulation material in them.A short circuit here is bad news.Changed mine for this reason, cost 7.00.
