340 utility pto questions

Moving a pto asm. from a parts/nonworking 340 to a working 340 utility. The pto is the round style which I believe is the newer clutch style pto asm. Mounting and bolt up was no problem since the receiving tractor was set up for ipto.

How does on check and change the oil level in the pto unit? There appears to be a breather on the top center and a possible drain or level plug on the right side about 3/4 of the way down the unit. Did not see a drain plug under the unit, there maybe one just did not see it.
Does the unit take Hytran oil or 80/90 gear oil?

The pto currently appears to be stuck in the "engaged" position but once I find out if the asm has any oil in it and get it changed if it does I"ll move on to that issue next.

Thanks for any advise for it is greatly appreciated.

BMD, you are correct on the check level plug location. A drain plug is located on the bottom. Capacity is 10 gallons and folks on here vary as to whether they use Hy-Tran or oil and what brand they purchase. Good luck with your project - more than I would tackle.

So based on your post the pto asm. shares its lubrication from the oil in the transmission case and does NOT have its own separate oil supply.

So,if the oil level is Ok in the transmission case the ipto asm should be good to go to work?
Currently using Hytran equivalent oil in the transmission case. This 340 is occasional use/work in progress tractor.

thanks for the info.

The PTO has it's own oil supply and uses Hy-Tran fluid. Fill it through the breather until it runs out the level check plug on the side.

When switching from the band/planetary style PTO to the disk clutch type you also need to change the PTO gears in the front of the clutch housing to keep the correct speed on the output shaft.

Thank everyone for the info...I assume the level check plug is 3/8 recessed plug about 3/4 way down the right side of the pto unit and there should be drain plug underneath somewhere.
So by guessing the pto unit should hold 2 or so quarts of hytrans fluid to check plug level.

Will get fluid changed soon and engaging lever moved over and go from there...

thanks everyone for guidance

No the PTO is sealed on both ends. All was refering to the transmission case. The PTO will hold maybe a quart or so of hytran oil. The fill plug is up on top of the PTO assembly as mentioned before, and the level check plug is about 3/4 down on the right side.

Hope this helps ya........Jordan

There is a plug on the bottom for draining, a plug on the side for checking the level, and a giant plug on top for filling. Use Hy-tran and fill it until it runs out of the side plug hole.
