Farmall A w/mower ??

I am looking for something to mow a couple of acres with. I did a little research & I "think" I know what I am looking for that would work for me, but just wanted to run past the experts with experience on here. I have several acres with no hills that has a mix of weeds & grass. It gets about 10" high when I don't keep up on the mowing & since I live in a drought area, it is NOT very dense (other than a few low areas where the water ends up after a rain). My question.....
Would I be alright with a Farmall A with a 5' or 6' Woods mower?
Should I consider a Cub or even a Super A?

Based on my experience with my Cub, I would NOT try mowing 10" grass/weeds with one. Even with minimal hills, that would be quite a load for the 60 CID engine. I assume an A with 113 CID would handle it, but I would be sure to keep the blades sharpened. Good luck!

If you are going to mow anything but short grass, an A,SA, or cub will not pull it. We have a 185 Lowboy that does not have enough power to pull in anything but short grass.

A finish mower will not handle 10" tall grass or weeds. Period. If you plan on keeping the grass mowed down to 3 or 4 inches tall, then a Farmall A with a 5 foot mower will work just fine. Do not go to a 6 foot mower.

Used to cut 10 acres with A and belly mower. Don't let grass get over 6". A and Super are almost the same except HP and hydraulics. Hyd is the Super. Cub would have trouble with this. I have both. Sharp blades a must. I leave em on and grind em.

a cub would beable to do the job i cut over 12 inch dense grass and weeds with it and woods belly mower i just had to cut it in half passes and it did fine

JT: I certainly wouldn't put the cub or 185 in the same class with an A or SA. My SA will burn the belt right off the mower if I don't keep it sharp. I have never seen it want for power, even in 2' high thick grass. If the blades are sharp, it mows decent.

Every fall, I mow off corn stalks after combining, just to clean up my deck. It has no problem with that.

Now I don't make a practice of doing these things everyday, however I do have an area I mow off at 10" high and thick grass, low gear and sharp blades and I have no problem.

Hugh,
Aren't the engines in the Cub, the A and 185 the same, or am I mistaken?

I'm not Hugh, but you're mistaken. The A and SuperA have a larger engine; 113 c.i. OHV vs 60 c.i. Flathead "cub" engine.

Rusty: I beg to differ with you, I do this every 3 weeks. I will agree, much higher than 10" it wont mow it even in one pass. I left an area this spring, about 30' x 10', wanted it to go to seed. Last week I mowed that off at roughly 30" high, no problem heading into that full width of mower in 1st gear. I did cross that a couple of times to get it even, but mainly to chop up the grass. Let me assure you though, 10" is no problem. Now I agree the blades do have to be sharp.
