Our FFA recently had a Super M donated to us to restore Problem is it had gotten burnt up while trying to push in a brushpile . The tag is melted off. How can we tell the year it was made from any casting numbers. Thank you Jerry

Look on the engine block under No1 sparkplug for a flat machined surface that may have the serial number stenciled into the metal. It may have layers of paint on it making it difficult to read.

The SM was produced in 1952-1954. 52 is X; 53, Y; 54, Z. 1st two numbers are month and day. 10*1*X means the part was cast on Oct 1 1952. Parts can sit around a from a few days to 1-2 months or more before being used. Engine serials can be quite a bit different from chassis serials due the the engines being used in other machinery.

If you dont know about the casting codes howmuch more dont you know about what you are going to rebuild. Better get some manuals. Has anyone ever gone to a show where you could see finished product. I have seen many redone projects from a FFA group and wonder just who is the instructor and why would you call it rebuilt when too many mistakes were made. So you guys need to do a ton of research before you even start.

Well I know enough not to ask you for any help Did you ever think to offer some advise instead of just being a sour critic. I am glad the other two responders were willing to help us out. That is what I had hoped this forum was for .

When you have literally 1000's of "Expert" Opinions on this site, you learn to take the Sweet with the Sour. Just let it Roll on.......

Good luck with your project. If it aint perfect when you are done you can always get another, then another and another until you have one that is perfect. Enjoy. I wish I had that kind of opportunity.
