McCormick-Deering 10-20 experts please help!

I have both a 1925 and 1927 10-20. We just tore down the 1927 and are in need of engine parts for the rebuild. Two of the 4 pistons where rusted stuck but the other two where in amazing shape.

We took the engine to a gentlemen who said it was a Babbit-Rod Crank and that it was more expensive than normal. Is this true?

What model of IH tractors will parts be exchangeable?

The clutch looks pretty suspect, are clutch plates and springs available?

I also need a new intake manifold along with many misc parts that I see online.

I have only look online so far and have not call Rice Equipment yet.

Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dave

If the rods are in bad shape with a lot of wear they may need to be rebabbitted. The crankshaft would need to be checked by a good auto machine shop to measure the shaft for wear and decide if it needs to be ground undersize. It may be egg-shaped from the dipper oil system and should trued so their's no high spots on the shaft.

There's a place in WV that rebabbits rods and you should call him or any other place that does this to see if they can redo your rods. Any of them will need the rod journal measurements so they can size the rods. At one time years ago this was big business. I had Federal Mogul do some off a twin cylinder garden tractor, but I don't think they do that now. Hal
I will post the phone number later. Can't seem to find it.

Thanks for the info. I took off the head of the 1925 and it had been rebuilt and parked. the grease pen numbers on the values where plainly visible. This was confirmed by my uncles who used to run the tractors. I might need to take this motor in to the rebuilder for parts.

Dave,Im no expert but I have broke several of these tractors loose and got them running.I have never pulled a crank, check with plastic gage and shim as needed.Even though the pistons are rusted they will clean up,and install new rings from rice{hes on vacation},Hone your sleeves and install new o rings on the bottom of your sleeves, ive never had one to smoke.Your valves are critical. There is a place in Baltimore MD called Sunhine Equ.{I think} that will reline your clutch plates very cheap,Best clutch system made,You will never need to use your brakes if there done right,The F30 has the same basic motor.Call any comerical truck dealership and they can tell you who can reline your clutch

Here's the phone number in WV. It's known as the Roberts Bearing Service in Ripley, WV. Hal

James, good advice. Watch e-bay for babbit bearings. The mechanic wants to charge more because he doesn't know much about these old, slow-speed engines. Look for a stuck 10-20, F-30 or W-30 engine for the parts you need. Gordon Rice (814) 226-9200 can help with some parts and good advice.

ive got a set of rods for a 10-20 out in the building im pretty sure of it. ill go check here in a bit and get back if they have good babbits in them
