Fuel, SH vs SM

Reading the posts recently re the gas guzzling M's. I decided to check out my SH. This morning, pulling a 5 bar rake, Nice easy flat ground, med rpm ,3rd gear. Raked about 5 acres of alfalfa. It used 1.8 gals of fuel in 1.5 hours. That's close to 1.2 gals per hour. Pretty cheap raking I think.

Gordo – that pretty much parallels my experience. Both my SM and SH pull double wagon sets at the Christmas tree farm every December (involves about 50% running lightly loaded at 1/2 throttle and 50% idling). The SM goes thru 11 – 12 gallons in an 8 hour day. The SH will do the same work on about 8 gallons.

Right on!

My M goes thru about 5 gallon in 4 hours pulling a double basket V-rake; one of the cheapest running tractors on the place.

966 will bale roughly 140-150 acres on one tankful. The 686 has been "odd-jobing" all summer on a tankful that I filled the second week of April.

Also, ran the 1066 non-stop from dawn to dusk yesterday hauling hay to the stack yard; never shut it down all day long. When I quit last night, the fuel guage had "just" moved off the full peg.

So, it really makes a difference just what job they are doing and how hard they are actually working.
