ANOTHER alt question...

Hey guys-
I have yet another alternator question. I bought a Delco Remy for my H and it fits under the hood great, without a belt tensioner. My question is that i hooked it up, Battery power to the Bat. terminal and #2 to the amp gauge. It works great but what about #1? What is the point of that?

Thanks Again,

Matt

I connected mine in what's called a 3 wire set up.
Term 1 wire through a diode to the ignition switch and coil.

Term 2 to the battery terminal on the alternator. The bat terminal is then wired to the neg side of ampMeter (which is also wired to supply power to the ignition switch), and the positive side of the ampMeter is wired to the bat and bat side of the starter solenoid.

I think you have a single wire set up which works good, but needs higher rpm's to start charging.

Most people wire them up like this. Big post wire goes the the amp gauge, #2 wire goes to the big post. #1 which is the excite wire goes to the ignition switch the side that is hot only when the switch is on. You will need a diode or light in that wire or you will not be able to shut the engine off

Yeah it does take a about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle to get the alt. excited the way I have it set up, but then it charges fine after that.
