farmall m waterpump packing

Anyone know the right way to pack these pumps. Packing comes in 1/4 inch thick split rings. It"s suppose to take three of them. Had a hard time getting them in. Used packing nut to drive in. Not sure if packing is all the way in against shoulder. Ran tractor for 1/2 hour. Seemed a little hot to the touch at packing nut area. Now it"s leaking a little antifreeze out the packing nut when I shut off tractor. Should I have greased packing before installing. Maybe dry packing has now worn impeller shaft?
Thanks,
Ditz

You don"t have to grease the packing, it is already impregnated with a sealer/lubricant. Tighten the packing nut a little more and see if that seals the leak.

When I repacked my M, I took out all the old ones. I added about a half dozen or so, and still needed one more after I got everything all tightened up

There is no set number, but 3 or 4 sounds about right. Keep tightening the packing nut (carefully), don't get it too tight. They tend to work loose, but the thing seals after a period of time. I have heard to use locktite on the threads.

It depeds on if you got the graphite impregneted packing on whether or not to grease them. I pack them in 1 at a time alternating the splits so they don"t line up to allow water to pass. I usually pack enough in to allow a gap between the brass gland to tighten down the packing and the t-bar at the top about 1/4 inch or so. Do not over tighten the nut the springs should be able to keep the shaft pulled tight.

I dought you messed o the impeller, but did you take the old packing out, and what color did you put in? The last local dealer here had both the white and black(Impregnated) packing. One time Id get the white, next time the black, but I always soaked them in oil first, then once it was together I greased it up.
