Cub Hydraulic Pump

Can someone tell me how to get the Woodruff key out of the hydraulic pump shaft? Could someone have used epoxy or super glue to hold it in, or is there something else I need to know? I am trying to get to the shaft seal.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It should just slide out of the keyway. Could somebody have used an adhesive to hold it in? Sure. Most likely loctite. However, there's no reason to do that. It's probably just wedged.

Get a narrow bladed screwdriver under one end, give it a twist, and it'll pop right out.

Thanks for your reply. This key is stuck very tightly. The tractor owner tried to remove it to replace the seal but was unsuccessful and brought it to me and I have, so far, been unsuccessful. If it is Loctite, or super glue or epoxy, I don't know any way to get either of them loose except heat which I am reluctant to use. I did try heating it with a large soldering iron but the key did not get very hot.

Woodruff keys are usually flat on the bottom. If the key is wide enough you can drill and tap it being careful not to break the tap. Then run a jack screw in it and it should come right out rw

Use a pair of side cutter pliers. Hold them parallel to the shaft and grip the sides of the key then pry up.

If it's really a woodruff key, as in a 1/2 round key, you should be able to remove it by tapping one end down into the shaft recess with a punch. The key will rotate in the recess and the other end will pick up enough to allow you to get something under it.

Thanks for all the replies. I finally got the key out - with a carbide burr. Even when there was just a thin fragment left, I still had to dig it out. I have used many Woodruff keys, but I have never seen one like this. I do not know what was holding it.

Thanks again.

This reply is a little late, but may help someone else. I had the same problem on one recently and ended up taking it to a local machine shop, where he MIG welded a nut to the key and pulled it that way
