where is the first place to look for a lack of spark problem

On most the points. Would be nice if you added more info, like if its a mag or distriutor

Ok that makes it easier to help you. Pull the distributor cap off, rotor, the dust cover. Then with the switch on open and close the points by hand. Make sure the points are closed when you start doing this. You should get a spark from the points when you open and close them. If you don't then you probably need new points or you need to clean the points you have.
