F14 Experts !!

This is just a curiosity question at this point.

On the back of an F12/14 there is about a 6" square cover directly above the PTO. Looking in the transmission case this is just an open hole. Was there some optional thing that the hole was for? In looking through the books I have for this tractor I don't find anything.

All the 12 and 14 series tractors had this cover plate, My O-12 has it. I have never seen any book, or parts book or attachments manual showing what was meant to go there, possibly a mechanical lift arrangement to come of the gearbox was to be arranged like that for the F-20 and F-30 but they gave the idea away and opted for the hydraulic lift for the F-12 that came out about 1935.

You maay have to look at the other applications of the 12 14 series such as road graders road rollers or hi lo s. That same housing was used for all of them.

The parts book calls it a rear cover plate, cover for what it doesnt say. I too thought as Andy, but dont see how you could inspect much through that hole. I also thought as steelfronts, and Im lead more that way, but came across a picture sometime back, where something was mounted behind a tracotr, not sure which one it was, and the tracor was controlled from the seat of the implement, shifting, braking, etc... But again I dont see how that would have worked on the 12/14s. I guess its one of those little mysteries we'll never know 100% for sure.

There could be other needs for that detail, such as to mount the whole tranmission case to a fixture in order to machine all the holes, bosses, etc of the case. Other applications may be have been for use in the assembly process. At the end they would put a cover on it and call it an inspection hole.

Well, just as I assumed. Nothing more than a cover over a hole that was just there:)

I was just sure there was some clever something that went there.

I does look like it would make a good attachment hole for a hydraulic pump that run off the PTO shaft, internally connected. It's wide open in there and would have been really easy.
