Super C Oil Pump

I pulld the oil pump out of my Super C today. I have noticed low oil pressure lattely. I sanded the cover level on a piece of glass and it looks good. I don't have a replacement gasket. I was thinking of making a gasket out of an aluminum can and spraying it with Copper Coat. The nearest dealer to me doesn't carry much for parts so it will be next weekend before I could put here back together. Does anybody see any problems with this? I tried to put it back together without a gasket but it wouldn't turn. I put shims made from an aluminum can under the cover plate and the pump turned perfectly.

You still may have too much clearance. For good oil pressure the clearance needs to be on the tight side of the spec. Get the right gasket or sand the gears until you get the right clearance and run it w/o gasket.

You need the proper gasket for clearence of the gears the gastet is paper thin and if you made one from a al can and the gears dont turn you have a problem as the gears should turn free and the alum gasket you made is thicker that needed.

I had low pressure on my Super-A, and also had gear wear on my cover. I had it ground smooth. I got TWO gaskets with my engine-overhaul gasket set, both paper-thin. With only one gasket, the pump was very hard to turn, and with the second in place, it turned fine, so that was the end of any measuring for me!
I found a quarter-inch blown out of my gasket when I first opened it up, so no wonder my pressure was low. Now, it stays pegged at 30 pounds pressure on my 30lb-max gauge.
(It leads me to wonder if the original gauge was supposed to read to 60lb.)

Duane, to answer your question more directly, I don"t know why that WOULDN"T work, but the risk might be that it might give you TOO much clearance. My paper gaskets, if I"m remembering correctly, were only a few thousandth"s thick.

The paper gasket measures 0.006". The oil pump end clearance (measured with plastigage between the gears and the end plate) should be 0.0035"-0.006".

The only problem that I can see is if you can generate enough clamping pressure against the aluminum to make a seal without bowing the cover. Otherwise, it should work fine. If you blow it up, you are on your own, no matter if you use an IH paper gasket or a pop can.
