F12 transmission cover removal

I know I saw this discussed once before, but in doing a search I could not find it.

Any suggestions how to get the trans cover off? It appears the 4 large 5/8? bolts that stick up out of the trans case are holding in down?

Those are some type of mounting studs. You can usually pry under them and they will come out when you have all the other bolts out, or thread a nut on it it get it loose and then pry it out. They are not threaded on the end that goes into the transmission, so they usually come out quite easily.

Those are dowel pins. It's just rusted in place.

I used an old wood chisel tapped between the cover and the housing on either side of the dowels to pop 'em loose.

Gasket has often become pretty well one with the cover too, so you may need to tap all the way around the perimeter of the cover to break the bond.

You could use silicone gasket maker, but I myself do not use it or recommend it. Just buy a large sheet of gasket material and make the right gasket, you will have some material left over that always comes in handy when you need to make gaskets.

Use it! Nothing wrong with it at all as long as you let it dry before you use it, and dont glob it on, just enough to make a good seal. Make sure both surfaces are good and clean. I tried to make a gasket for mine and ater 3 or 4 attempts I trew away the gasket paper and pull out the RTV. Works fine.

Cutting your own gaskets is not the easiest option, but makes a better, longer lasting seal. You might even be able to get a transmission cover gasket from the dealer.

The question was if RTV could be used, and it can, with success, and cheaper and easier than trying to use a gasket. Whether or not you approve of it, or recommend it, doesnt matter to me. I have used it on my Ms, Hs and my F 14 and it works fine. Im glad you have had success with the gaskets. I personally havent on Ms and Hs, and since the ones for 12/14s are made new, unless Rice is making, then its a moot point for me to keep wasting my time and money on gaskets that dont fit right to start with, or I get off just enough to have to start making a new one that I get too much time invoved. RTV will work, and work fine.
