Cam bearing install

Since posting replies is non-fuctional, I'll try a new thread.

Does anyone in your area have a lathe?

It would be easy to make a driver for the front cam bearing out of a piece of steel stock.

Make it the same diameter as the camshaft journal, or a few thousandths smaller, with a larger "flange" to pull the bushing into place.

To install any bearings farther in, the flange would have to be just smaller than the block's bearing bore diameter, however, to install just the front one, it could be larger.

It would be easier to take it to an auto machine shop and have them install and hone it for clearance. Hal

I have done that in the past, but there are so many different sizes so I bought the adjustable cam bearing installing tools.

There are machine shops around, but it would probably be cheaper and quicker to just buy a cam bearing tool. Neither cheap enough nor quick enough, though. This tractor has to be out in the field working next week. I'm already a week behind on this project because the cam didn't come in.

I always use sockets. Of course you need a fairly large set but I have a 3/4" drive set and I can usually find one that fits the bearing.

I found a 3/4" socket that came close but it was a bit loose and the length was awkward so I used the plywood plug I had already made. 3/4" flat washers also come close.

Anyway, I got it in. I ended up mostly driving it because tightening the bolt tends to rotate the bearing, misaligning the oil holes. If I ever do this again I can see how to avoid that problem. The bolt should go in from the back and the nut should be tightened while the wooden block is held still.

I used a 3/4" floor flange against the wooden block on the front (I think I could have dispensed with the block) but I had to use a piece of 1.25" channel on the back due to lack of space.
