574 clutch adjustment

The clutch on my 574 has gotten sloppy. When you let out on it you have to bounce it on occasion to get it to enguage. I read the adjustment procedure and don't quite get it.

Any info or advice you have on the topic would be appriciated.

Should be no "adjustment" just a pedal height you set with the clutch linkage, if the clutch pedal was "up in the air" and you adjusted the linkage to lower the pedal, chances are the clutch is worn pretty good.

I doubt that adjustment will eliminate the problem you are describing. I think a tractor split is in order- along with a new pressure plate, new clutch plate, new throwout bearing, new pilot bearing and resurfacing of your flywheel.

Hi Jeef, did a 684 about 3 years ago and parts are about $350.00.
Are you sure the clutch linkage is not binding or the clutch release bearing carrier is binding.
There also should be a clutch return spring from clutch pedal to frame under the dash.
There is an inspection plate that can be removed on the bottom of clutch housing and with a light you can inspect the mechanism.
Usually the clutch on those tractors start to slip when going up a hill in 4th high.

I will double check it, There is some adjustment that looks like it would give the mecanisime a bit more enguagement, I will have to look it over. Once the clutch enguages it seems to hold fine but it dosen't want to enguage it is like you are holding the peddle down. I hope it is not a clutch install. Parts are 450 and I would have to do the labor. A local shop who is always the cheapest told me how easy they are to chnge in that model but still wants 1200.00 for labor. It makes sense, I don't expect him to work for free, but I cannot pay that much out and will have to do it myself.

I was thinking about making a cradle to hold up the tranny side of the tractor and a floor jack for the engine side, chock the front end to keep it straight up and down and clear out everything that keeps the halves from coming apart. Seems like more of a time issue that anything. With my wide open new shop I really don't have an excuse for not doing it myself.

Hi Jeef, from your description, it would appear the clutch release bearing mechanism is binding.
The adjustment is the threaded rod with the clevis on the end that connects to the clutch pedal. There are grease zerks on the clutch fork shaft that goes into the bell housing.
In the last 6 years my brother & I have done clutch jobs on his 454, 495 & 684. It takes about 8 hrs by the time you take flywheel to be ground.
Can give you blow by blow instructions but am reluctant as without proper jacks & stands it is dangerous job.

Well as it turns out the clutch linkage was improperly adjusted and after taking some measurements and making the adjustments, it will flat jerk you back in your seat when you let the clutch out.

Thanks for the info, I have split a few before, just bever one this big.
