656 hydraulic pump

I have a 1966 Farmall 656 on which the hydraulics seem extremely slow and weak. I have had the tractor over 20 years and never replaced the pump. Do those pumps go bad slowly over time? Are the new ones of any better design or are they just the same as the old? Are they hard to change out?

I would say do the basics first, such as changing the hydraulic oil if you havent already and make sure it is filled to the correct level. Also replace the hydraulic filter element if you havent yet. It may not neccasairly be the pump wearing out but rather that it is satrving for oil. Always better to check the easy (and less expensive) parts first if ya ask me.
