Farmall Cub engine seal....

I finally got the little Cub tractor out from the corner of the shop and rebuilt the carb. The engine started fine, but very soon started leaking engine oil profusely from the clutch bell housing straight down onto the floor.

I think the rear main engine seal is totally gone. I"ve never had the tractor apart. I bought it several years ago as a restoration project. My question: Once I split the tractor, how big a deal is it to replace the seal? Will I have to drop the crankshaft out, or can I put it in with the crank still in place?

I"m waiting for some technical literature to help me through this, but I thought I would tap into some well earned knowledge found on this website. Any tips would be appreciated.

Pretty sure the Cub uses a seal retainer plate that is bolted to the block, you should be able to remove the retainer and change the seal without any extra hassle.

The rear crankshaft oil seal is held in place by a retainer plate that is bolted to the crankcase with five 5/16-18 x 7/8" bolts. The retainer plate also has an oil seal gasket. You'll have to split but won't have to drop the shaft. Might try tightening the retainerr plate bolts first (wishfull thinking).

Along with what gator said you will have to remove the cluth and plate also remove flywheel
Than you will get to the seal retainer.

Ron, A couple years ago I rebuilt my Cub including the engine and installed the seal that came with the the gasket set I bought for it. It has not leaked at all. What doesn't fit? Roger

I JUST went through this. Had my cub in the shop all winter in hopes of getting a new coat of paint installed on her. Ended up having to put er to work, so just shot on some cheap paint. This tractor never leaked more than a drop or two of oil. Went to cutting hay, leaked like a sieve! Same thing, out of the bell housing. Was sure it was th rear main. Ordered a new one, split er in half, took the old one out, looked FINE. Just for fun, I put a wrench on the rear pan bolts. All loose. Same with the bolts in the rear main retainer. Can't say for sure it wasn't the rear main, but my guess is the loose bolts were the culprit. Ya don't need to take the retainer out to get the rear main out. The new ones have a slightly smaller OD. I smeared some RVT around it and slid er right in. No Problems yet...
Easy job to split er in half, just time consuming.
Check out farmallcub.com also. Lots of good info, and helpfull folks there.

Good luck.
