PTO problems using brush hog

I have a farmall M. I connected a 5 ft brush hog to it for the first time. I started mowing and within 20 ft the the PTO disengaged itself. Everytime I pulled the lever to re-engage it, the PTO would kick out again.

Is there a problem with my PTO or did I just have the brush hog set to low with too high grass? The brush hog was 8-10 inch off ground and the field was 24-30 inch grass.

Also is the PTO supposed to just pull up into the "on" position or should it "snap & lock" into "on"? Thanks

While holding the clutch pedal down, pull up on the PTO lever. While still pulling up on the lever, start letting the clutch pedal up very slowly, and if you feel a sort of "jerk" in the lever, depress the clutch pedal slightly and then finish pulling the PTO lever into position.

If this doesn't solve the problem, there is most likely some wear issues buried deeper inside.

Kirk, We had a Super M that would fall out of gear like yours, it was saved from the scrape yard and only used with a finish mower. The cheap fix on that one was a tarp strap. Yes it looks bad but it worked for 7 years. Sold it last summer.
