Farmall M Smoking Problem

I recently bought a 1950 farmall M. It will be idling and all of a sudden, it will start smoking very light blue exhaust for a few seconds and then quit, then will do it off and on during idle or slower RPM. When working the tractor at full throttle it doesn"t seem to smoke at all. It is usung oil too. I am not really an overhaul mechanic but do light mechanical work myself. I have not had a chance to do a compression test yet. The tractor is trying to miss a little when under load, fouled plugs?? Can you Farmall guys tell me what to check for? Could it be rings or valves? Where do I start? Thanks for any help!
 
Doing a compression test will give you an idea what shape the engine is in. It may be time to
rebuild the engine. I would keep a close check on the oil level when working the tractor. Hal
PS: It could be worn sleeves, rings and valve guides.
 
do like el toro said and run a compression test. run a dry one then wet. first pull the spark plugs and examine them closely, keep track of the cylinder they came out of . look for oil fouling, or wet plugs ect. next with the plugs out and throttle wide open, do compression test on each cylinder, and write the numbers down. they should be within 10% of each other, somewhere between 80-125 psi. then squirt 2-3 pumps of oil with an oilcan in each cyliner, turn motor over a couple times to spread oil around, then re-run compression test. if you get a big jump in compression, most likely rings are worn. if the compression doesnt jump or very little, look toward valves, guides and or seals.

Try this:
With it warmed up, drive it in 5th at 12 to 15 mph (assumes it is a safe procedure with steering, brakes, and road conditions).
throttle down and let it slow until it is at idle speed. If it smokes pretty hard just after slowing, in that high vacuum situation, I would try a set of valve seals (cheap, and requires only limited removal of parts, like plugs, valve cover, and rocker arms, to get it done. JimN
 
Thanks for all your responses! I will take your advise and do the compression test and take it from there. I have never torn deep into an engine like this before, but I guess there is a first time for everything! I will get a service manual before I start. Are there any other tips that I should know before tackling this problem? I appreciate any other responses!
