What type of oil to use

With the addition of my M to the family I got an operator manual with it. It states to use 20w or 30w depending on temperatures. Is this still viable or would moving to a heaver weight be advisable in these older engines or would it do any harm to them? I was told today that older oils were more viscous than they are today.

Thanks for the help.

30w is fine to use in the summer the 20w is for winter months, many people are running 15w-40 in them now. The most important thing is that you have the oil full and changed on some regular basis.

The oil recommended in the owners manual was the best there was AT THAT TIME. We have much better grades of oil available to us today, and that ol' M will respond well to them. 10w-30 or 10w-40 is fine, 15w-40 is also a good choice. I hesitate to recommend the 5w-30, but it might be OK? I just don't like the though of the 5 weight.

If you are going to work it, use 30wt.

If it is going to be a parade tractor, use 10w30.

Just don't run it without oil. :>)

Yep, ANY oil available today is ten times better than what was available when the tractor was new.

I would shy away from any 0w- or 5w- oils, though.

I prefer to run 15w-40 diesel rated oil in mine as they are working tractors yet.

Thanks for the 15w-40 verification, my 47M has been getting quite a work out working the roads during the monsoon rains, just happen to have some Rotella in the garage. :D
