Need a felt seal...any ideas?

Hi folks...I"ve been overhauling/rebuilding my grandfathers 25-V sickle mower. The only part left that I need is a felt seal that goes in front of the pitman bearing. According to the parts list in the owners manual, the felt seal should be 1 39/64" x 2" x 1/4" thick.

Anyone know where I can get a felt seal like this?

If I were you, I'd find a piece of Neoprene & cut it to size -- Neoprene's much more durable than felt, and also tends to be more leak-resistant than the old felts. I know that Lang's Old Car Parts in Winchendon, Massachusetts (which has every part for a Model T automobile that you'll ever need) stocks felt front-wheel-bearing seals for the purists and Neoprene ones for the pragmatists.

I've cut up old knee braces or elbow braces to make replacement seals, and no trouble yet...

That’s my 2¢ worth; your mileage may vary.

Another source is to check a shoe store or farm store for felt pads like they put in the bottom of shoes, They are pretty cheap and will make lots of felt seals.

Measure the actual shaft size and the diameter of the bore the seal sits in. Any good bearing & seal place should be able to find a modern seal close enough to work. A quick look on the internet shows Chicago Rawhide # 16046 should be real close, 1.625" shaft diameter, 2" bore size, 1/4" width.

Only issue I can think of is making sure there's suffient lubrication on the seal, as rubber seals don't absorb oil like felt.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will start at the local bearing/seal shop to see if the have anything that will work. Has anyone seen the sheets of felt at TSC or similar store?

Thanks again,
Justin
