What to use to cut off Axles on Farmall 450 ?

Man I feel like a dork. Been working on this 1957 Farmall 450 gas bringing it back from the dead almost and got all the leaks fixed and parts rounded up, running good ,new Ta etc. etc. Finally got it to the painter and he calls and informs me that the two axles are different lengths.I had never had the wheels off so guess I didn't notice, looked at it tonight and left side has K codes so must be from 560 or? Anybody got a cheat or cheap way to cut that left one off to match the right? Will a portable band saw be able to cut through with a straight cut and then just buff the outer edge to match original. Open for ideas here as he wants to get this thing done for our show July 30 and out of his paint room. Thanks for any and all ideas. Migraine
 
A stand mounted electric band hacksaw should be the ticket to solve your problem. You may have to move the hub all the way in for clearance but I've used this method on a SC with exacting results. Carefully use a angle grinder to bevel slightly the outer circumference of the newly cut axle and then center punch the center of the end of the axle and drill a 1/4" hole about 1/4" deep. Using a pointed reamer, make the original bevel in the center of the end of the cut off axle. A little paint applied and shazam! Even the correct police will never notice. G'luck!
 
Migraine a good sharp blade in a porta band should do the job. Maybe you can place a flat piece of iron across the wheel for a guide to get it good and straight.

I worked at the green tractor store for many years we used a cut off saw or chop saw , we just blocked it up under the alxe and closed it in the vise part of the saw and went at it worked great make sure that you have good earplugs, rounded the end of the axle with 4" grinder presto bingo
 
Umm... if you didn't notice it before, why do anything? Is it really that much of a difference? Wouldn't cutting it weaken it a little? I have no idea... just wondering.
 
Use a pipe wrap to mark the circumference, then use a Porta-Band. Start the cut at the top then "roll" the saw around making a scribe around the shaft. Once the starter line is scribed, just walk the saw around until completly cut through. A recipricating saw can be used using the same technique.

I liked the idea of counter-boring to imitate the dead center hole. Good luck.

The best way is to use a chop saw. however jack the tractor off the ground and remove the wheel on the side you want cut. Put the tractor in a very ;ow gear. You want to cut the axle while the shaft is rotating. This precents overheating and also ensures that the cut end will be perfectly straight. Do not try to cut the axle without rotating it.
 
Migraine: You speak of this K date code, what is the K on, axle or axle carrier? K code would be 1965, much to late for a 560. I'm not sure a 656 axle carrier will bolt up to the older chassis. the axle may work, not sure? If the K is on the axle carrier, I'd have more faith that it came from a 41 M.

That being the case you best check the length of axle carriers, as well as axles before you do any cutting, I don't know about M, SM, 400, etc., however in the case of H, SH, 300 and 350 there are differences in both axle and axle carrier length. H had shorter axles, and it also had shorter axle carriers than 300 or 350. I'm talking standard axles in all cases.
 
Correct police (of which I am not a member) will not like the paint, as the axles were not painted at the factory.
 
Thanks for all ideas and replies. Looks I have a little more detective work to do. The K code is on the axle carrier but I really did not look if it matched the other one in size and configuration. This tractor has lived a very hard life and was abused as a child I'm sure. Probably should have waited for a better one but was the last one in the 100 Farmall series I was putting together so bought it . (Actually I still need the 600 to be complete). When my mom took out 200' of fence with the axles sticking out one day, my dad just cut the "extra" off both sides with a portable band saw. Ended "His" problem for good.
