1941 M Farmall

I have just recently purchased my grandfathers M and it has been gone thru mech. however it has been started with a crank for last 30 years and so I want to get the elect. all working order with a new starter and then a paint job. Can anyone tell me if I should do anything to make starting easier and running at top performance such as any kind of upgrade like electronic ing. or leave alone? Also he has always just ran a straight pipe with no muffler? Can a guy find a crome piece of straight pipe. I plan to use this for parades only and show?? Any ideas on what works best would be appreciated??

if it starts easy with the crank, its tuned up pretty good!! check this site for a starter, otherwise steiner tractor parts has new starters for about 160 dollars. they also sell the chrome straight pipes too, also the chrome with the bend, both around 100 dollars. personally, i am not a big fan of the electronic ignition conversions, tho they do work well, i can carry a complete tune up kit on the tractor, and if any problems, just change a few parts and good to go. these old tractors have been running 50 + years with the old ignition systems, gotta say something for simplicity and durability.

If you buy a chrome stack make sure it is dubble wall or it will turn blue about 1 foot above the hood for about 6 inches and the rust soon as you get her hot TIM

If I were fixing up an M, I'd stay with the old ignition, just give it a tune up, new points, condenser, cap, coil, etc, etc. They run good with the old ignition units. You could put on a chrome pipe if you like, but in my opinion, they sound better with a muffler.

Hey Tim, you guys don't happen to have a spare 8060 D head for a M/SM do you? Your Grandpa needs one for his.
