Hi
I am out of the panic mode and trying to get educated about my new ? tractor. For now we will call it a 1951 M, unless I find out it's actually something else. I want to thank everyone for the replys and info. Is the info on specs, wiring, assembly diagrams, fluids, etc, that I can look at on the computer untill I get some books? What kind of jack is handiest when you have to jack up this beast, I will have to buy one, dont trust my 2ton car jack?
Thanks
Bob S.

Bob: I know you must be excited, and this is hard to do, but I would just wait until I got my operator's manual. It is all in there. As for a jack, I've seen some very nice tractor jacks - but not often. mike

Use a bottle jack and safely block it up if needed. Hopefully you don't need to jack it often. Is there a problem that requires jacking? Everything should be within reach just crawling underneith.

Hi
For now I just have to replace one of the front wheels ( narrow front ) assuming I can get the old one off, looks like it's been on there for 50 years or so.

To get one tire off the ground on a narrow front just run the other tire up on a short piece of 2X4 or 2X6. Dave.

Bob, it's pretty simple to get one front wheel off. Get your very largest lug wrench or a really big socket wrench and see if you can loosen the nuts on the lugs that hold that bad wheel on. Only loosen them, don't take them off. If you can't loosen those lugs, have a tire service come take the wheel off. I'm not kidding.

If you can loosen those lugs, then drive the good front wheel up on a couple scrap 2x4 boards. Stop the tractor, shut off the engine, put it in gear, and block both back wheels. Then take the lugs off and take the wheel off. It's heavier than a car wheel but not as heavy as a highway tractor wheel.

I use my 2 ton auto jack to lift the front end and the block up under the place between the oil pan and the pedestal. The tractor without the loader and wheel weights weighs in a little less than 3 tons total including rear gear box and tires so lifting the front end is no big deal. Did you open the steering box yet? I should state that steering an M even without a loader is a arm developer. Nuff said Henry

I agree about waiting for your manuals then you will have the info at your finger tips. About the jack--play it safe 3 tons min. High lift tractor jacks are available but I can't tell you where from offhand. My advice would be DON'T use a small short wheel base trolley jack this machine is too big and heavy to take any risks with. MTF

You may need a long pipe on the breaker bar to get the lug bolts broken loose. When going together again, use oil on the threads to make removal easier the next time. Some of these lug bolts have a tendency to have rust in the threads--have lots of penetrating oil handy. Start soaking the bolts right away.

One thing you can do without a manual is to add about a quart of diesel fuel to the crankcase, start the old girl up, and low idle it for about 10 minutes to warm it up and get a lot of the sludge out of the engine. Then drain that oil, and drop the oil pan. Note where the longer screws come out. There's probably years of goo in there. Refill with new oil.
Do the same with the transmission, no pan to drop though.
Welcome to the friendliest board on the internet.
