Question for Hugh MacKay

you wrote, re: a Super-A:
"If the shaft on the right brake is wallowed out, use shim stock. If shim stock is scarce, cut up a beer or pop can. It will make it tight as new for a fraction of the cost of machining and brass bushing."

If you wouldn't mind, how'd you go about that, putting in the extra metal?

Cut the can into a strip wide enough, then wrap around the shaft until you build up enough thickness to take the play out. We used the beer can technique all the time years ago to take up the slop on worn shafts.

It is just a home-made aluminum shim, made from a beer can. Roll it around the shaft and push it between the shaft and pedal. Keep it greased and it will last a while....

Uh-oh.
I buy my beer in bottles.

Any particular brand of beer better than the others, for this purpose?

Thanks for the tips!
Appreciate it!

Pete: It won't adversely affect you to consume a case of beer in cans. Heck you can even invite some buddies if your nervous.

Installing is quite simple, remove the pedal, pull the pivot shaft, cut a section of can width of pivot point. Roll it around the shaft until you get a tight fit. Put the brake pedal back on, the shim can't get out of there. Even if you get 5 years out of your shim, cheap fix and the pedal won't be frozen to shaft if you remove it every 5 years.

Miller Light seems to be the "universal" shim stock. Though Corona in a can is Mexican stock and may work better  I once used two cans to wrap a split muffler pipe on a Ford backhoe of my Grandfathers and secured with 3 hose clamps. I know, I should have used tie-wire. This lasted 5-7 years until he replaced the muffler, he said the cans were still there, no paint but not burnt through.

Gary: That's right, but it doesn't affect we YTer's. We keep our memory sharp just trying to remember all about these old tractors. Case of use it or loose it, as I see it.
