My SA has a lot of play in the steering. I have the shop manual and am getting ready to go into the steering box. Could any of you give me some pointer on what I am about to get myself into and maybe a source of parts. I thank you in advance.

You need to remove the front axle by removing the pin. You then can remove the bottom half of the sector replace everything seals bushings and maybe the top bearing and a new key. Parts will run around 50.00 when finished fill with 150 gear lube. Make sure the spindles are greased good maybe even removing the links on the top so you get good lube on the bottom of the spindles. I have done a bunch in the last few yrs and they will steer great.

gene i am replacing my steering shaft oil seal and would like to replace the steering rod bushing as well.I am unsure how to get the old bushing out and my luck in the past tells me i need to ask someone.

When you remove the large nut on the end the shaft will screw out the front of course the steering wheel needs to come off. The you can drive the bushing and old seal out towards the rear. I have a bushing driver set so its easy for me but you will be able to use a piece of round stock larger than the steering shaft but not too large so it will drive against the bushing and seal taking them both together towards the rear always need to replace the bushing when replacing the seal. glad to help you can call if you have problems 319-430-3907

thanks for the info gene.it looks to me like neither has ever been replaced. One other quick question while i have ya.In your opinion would it be ok to put lucas oil in there instead of gear oil?I really like the cling factor that lucas oil provides and i would think it would cut way down on a leak.Fourth gear is pretty noisy too and i was going to put a quart of lucas in there as well hoping it might cut the noise down a bit. Thanks in advance. Don: This is another of those "best brand of spark plug" topics, but for my money, the best thing to put into steering boxes today is John Deere corn head grease. It is a very "wet" grease and will lube well and not leave an air pocket like typical grease. It "settles" in between the gears and fills the gaps between the worm and sector gear. Equally as good - it does not leak out like gear lube. I learned about it on a internet site where a fellow rebuilds steering gear boxes for old vintage race Corvettes, Mustangs and Camaros. I have used it for about 5 years now on cars and tractors and could not be more pleased. Whatever you choose, good luck. mike

Dont know why it wouldnt work. I have done a bunch of them both the A and B have had success with the 150 gear lube just as long as it gets to the bushings and the worm runs fully in the lube sure steer great when done. I have also foun that replacing the input bearing with a new seal in the tranny does quiet down a bunch if that bearing has play. The final drives are straight cut and were noisy when new but the 150 will quiet down some noise. good luck.
