656 leaking oil at Steering Wheel

We have a 656 Utility, and today it started leaking oil at the steering wheel. I assume its the seal at the top of the steering motor. Anyone ever fix one like this? Do you have to pull the whole motor out? Is the shaft usually scored or can you usually get away with just a seal?

I have never done a seal on a 656 but I did a seal on an 856 several years ago. If I remember correctly I had to pull off the steering wheel and there was a special pair of tongs to pull out the seal assembly and install the new one. It was also very important to keep everything very clean.

That is as easy of fix that you will ever do , First remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller and two 1/4 inch fine thread bolts that are at least 4 1/2 inchs long as it makes it easier with the long bolts . Clean out the holes in the wheel and chase with a 1/4 fine tap . Remove the nut that holds the wheel on install the puller and tighten it up and give it a rap with a hammer and it will pop off . Next remove the snap ring that holds the seal in then set the steering wheel back on the shaft and give a quick hard turn don't care what way you turn it and the seal will pop wright out clean up and install new seal replace snapring and put the steering wheel back on and go to work .

GREAT! Thanks a lot. This board is a great resource. I just got done with hay and thought I would have a few days of downtime..guess not since the baler needs work too...
