Replacing a rear axle seal on an H - any tips?

A friend from PA called and needs to replace the axle seal on his H. I haven"t ever replaced one. Any hints or tips on this operation?

My buddy just did one on his M and it was simple. He jacked that side up, oiled the shaft, used a come along to pull the wheel off and then just slid the new one in after cleaning things up. It was a beer intensive job, but only due to the time involved ;)

When you get the wheel off, check the distance between the axel shaft and housing on the top side of the cap and the bottom. If the axel is closer to the top than the bottom then the wheel bearing is bad also. You can try to lift the axel also to check for slop. On My H the cap was just starting to rub the axel and the bearing was totally shot. Get bearings at a bearing house, MUCH cheaper than anywhere else.

Sflem849, has the right idea. I used some emery cloth and rubbed the axle down to make sure all dirt and rust were gone, actually shone it a bit, then I slathered it with fresh oil and carefully slide the seal on to its position....and then it was Miller Time..'er Molson's Canadian where I am

One thing to be careful with is the wheel. The center casting and the tire weigh a lot and can fall over and hurt you. I changed mine in the shed near the wall so that I could lean the wheel against the wall when it cleared the axle. Roger

I would get a engine hoist if you dont already have one. this is the safest and if your on cement it is easy to push it back on and save your back
