SA Tranny niose

Well after nearly three years in the shop I finally got my SA back to gether, painted and started up. I bought this tractor in salvage condition so I didn't get to drive it far until after I had completely been through it. I finally got to drive down the road far enough to get it warmed up real good and as luck would have it, the tranny is telling me it's very tired. I know these old tractors had a fairly loud whine to the transmissin but this one is extra loud and more of a vibrating grinding noise. It does it in all gears and louder with the PTO engaged. In neutral it's quiet. So does this sound like bearings or gears or maybe backlash? Sure hate to have to split it again but at least I get to work on it some more.

Try taking off the top of the trans and check the top shaft to see how much play is in the bearings.
Its a start!

I had the top off earlier but just to inspect. It looked okay so I closed it back up and changed the gear oil. I'll pull it agian and see if there's any play in the shaft. Either way I'll have to split it to replace anything won't I?

(quoted from post at 13:20:35 07/03/08) It's got straight 90 in it. I think I'll change it and go with 85/140 and see if that helps.
If you've already got 90 wt. in there, it won't help; you'll be wasting your money..... Sorry.
