LEAKIN' GREASE

MY '44 H STARTED LEAKING GREASE WHERE THE AXEL HOUSING IS BOLTED TO THE TRANNY. I THOUGHT TO JUST REPLACE THE GASKET, BUT I MET A GOOD OL' BOY AT AN AUCTION THIS LAST WEEKEND AND HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A BEARING GOING OUT THAT CAUSED IT TO START LEAKING. IT'S A BALL BEARING AND IF IT GOES OUT THE BALL BEARINGS CAN GET CAUGHT BETWEEN A GEAR AND THE CASE, CAUSING A BREAK IN THE CASE. IS THIS THE TRUE. THANK YOU.

If your tractor did enough damage to leak oil like that,I would think you'd have a noise in that side, especially when you let the clutch up under load.

THANKS FOR THE QWICK REPLY,DCW IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY NOISE AT ALL. IT JUST LEAKS. HAPPENED ALL OF A SUDDEN.

The part about the ball bearing is true, when the balls fall out the bull gear will try to push them through the bottom of the case, you will see many old Farmalls with about a foot long weld on the curved part of the belly from this kind of failure. BUT, I don't think there is any way that could cause it to leak oil between the axle housing and the main case.

DCW, THERE IS NO DAMAGE. IT'S JUST LEAKING GREASE WHERE THE AXEL HOUSING BOLTS TO THE TRANSMISSION. ITALKED TO A GENTLEMAN THIS WEEKEND AND HE TOLD ME THAT THE REASON IT STARTED LEAKING WAS BECAUSE THIS BEARING WAS STARTING TO GO OUT. SORRY I DIDN'T MYSELF CLEAR ABOUT THAT WHEN I FIRST POSTED. I'M NOT GOOD AT THIS AS THIS IS MY FIRST TIME.ASKING FOR HELP ON THIS FORUM. THANKS AGAIN

THANKS ALLAN AND UNFORGIVEN. I WAS JUST WORRIED ABOUT CAUSING FURTHER DAMAGE.(NO DAMAGE YET) I'LL TRY TIGHTENING THE BOLTS. IF THAT DOESN'T DO IT I'LL REPLACE THE GASKET.I'M KINDA NEW WITH THESE OLD TRACTORS (AND COMPUTERS),SO I THANK YOU ALL. HAVE A PLEASENT EVENING. GOTTA SING OFF. 2 AM IS GETTING CLOSER.

A leak at the gasket has nothing to do with the bearing -- a leak at that place is very common. If you can't tighten the bolts, you need a new gasket.
