Farmall 504 D - Upgrading from 12GPM to 17GPM. Filters???

I bought a NEW 17 GPM hydraulic pump a few weeks ago. Today I was near the CNH dealer and I ordered my gaskets, filters, ect.

My 1st question is: Can I use the stock filters? Somewhere I have read or heard that the stock filters are only good for 14GPM (12 GPM main pump + 4.5 GPM hitch pump = 16.5 GPM total, go figure). I have also heard the 17 GPM pump requires high-flow filters and that modifications are nessecary to upgrade. My total flow should be, 17 GPM + 4.5 GPM = 21.5 GPM. Can the stock 375085R91 filter package handle this flow? All three guys at the CNH sales counter could not answer this one.

My 2nd question is: Why did someone once suggest that I buy a new suction tube? It cost $48.00 + freight. I can understand a new gear ($187.00), but I am going to wait until I see the old one.

My 3rd question is: Has anyone done this conversion (I know several have) and kept the stock filters? Did you get full output or have restrictions and extra heat or excessive back pressure?

I am also going to replace the stock 1650 PSI relief with a 2050 PSI relief to gain loader performance and hopefully I will not break my axle.

Thanks,
Charles

Your CIH parts boys are sorely lacking in the knowledge department. You will need the high flow filters. A spacer must be made by your local machine shop the thickness increase of the high flow filter. This spacer goes between the frame and your original filter cover permitting sufficent clearance for the thicker filter. Have done this several times on 504 through 686 tractors. Works beautifully, and is cheap. The 17 GPM pump really wakes up the hyd. system. Let us know how it works........QR

Thank you QR. The filters you are mentioning confuse me. My filters are two replaceable canister elements in a reusable housing with a screen (374990R91) or (375085R91) for just the tandem elements. This was used until S#10807 (mine is S#3712) then it went to a one piece filter (388084R92)with a "mushroom" relief valve (386121R92). These are all under the 12 GPM breakdown.

Using the screen assembly with the tandem filters, I do not see how a longer filter will fit in the filter housing. I understand if I used something like the one piece (388084R92) style, a cover plate spacer is required due to longer length.

I have the TC-88 parts manual for the 504 and I have not found the filters I need. QR, do you happen to know the IH part number for the required filter, filters, or filter assemblies that will retrofit my F504D? I have machine shop access, a spacer is the least of my worries.

Thanks again,

Charles

I just came across this thread in searching on the newer filter style for my TD340A crawler, which has he same layout. I also upgraded the hydraulic pump to run a backhoe, butI have to keep rpm down or not enough fluid reaches the pump. If you implemented the high flow filter option, can you give me the specs on the new cover or spacer and thefilter pts? Thanks.
