Is a Farmall Cub Lo-boy the Right Tractor?

A friend of mine wants to buy a Cub Lo-boy with a 60-inch belly mower to mow is yard with. His yard is on a steep grade (20%). I like Cubs, but I don't think it has enough horsepower for the task. I used to mow up steep grades with a sickle bar mower with my dad's Farmall Cub and it would barely make it up in 1st. gear. Any suggestions? Would a Cub Cadet 184 do better?

My response would be to go for the 184... I have a 184 with a 60" finish mower and my front yard is a pretty steep grade, just overhauled over the winter and it is all it wants in 2nd gear. I don't know how an original cub would do, though they both utilize the C60 engine.

He'd be much farther ahead, and money in the pocket, with a brand new modern Cub Cadet. You'll pay $3500-$4000 for a decent 184 with a mower deck. A brand spanking new Cub Cadet with a 20+HP engine and 48-52" deck from Home Depot or TSC will run about $2500. It'll handle the hills no problem.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy my Cubs but my LoBoy mowing machine has let me down bigtime this summer. The oil pressure drops dangerously low after about 20 minutes of running. Starts out over 30, but is down to 15. Everyone's telling me the main and rod bearings are shot, and I don't have time to tear 'er down right now.

Good advice.
If you go with a Cub Cadet go to a dealer. They will match Home Depot/TSC price and provide support as needed
If you do go to a dealer check out the internet prices on the 2000 series-shaft drive then ask the dealer to meet the price.
