Hy-Trans vs Hy-Gard

A little background. I have a IH756, my dad runs all green -4430 & 4440. We share alot of equipment. He's not open to putting anything different into the JD's, but if it would not foul anything up, I would consider something in the 756 to make it easier to swap machinery. Right now, I have 1 cylinder for the IH that I end up hauling all over, and waste alot of time swapping it out just to move a disk, or what ever. I read a previous post about the differences in some of the oil, but would there be anything bad happen to my 756 if we put JD Hy-gard in the trans/rear end? The JD website suggests that their oil meets CIH MS-1207, MS-1209, MS-1210, MS-1, and IHC B-6

We have IH 1486, 806, 885, Case 1690 & JD 4430. We have used both hy gard and hy trans in both and never had a problem.

We share some equipment with JD guys. We use hytran and I'm sure they use hygard. Its all the same oil. Chances are they are both refined by the same company, just put into different buckets and barrels. I don't believe CaseIH or John Deere owns any of their own refineries.

Just a thought here: If you plan on buying alot of either oil, better do it quick and even stock up before your supplier reorders, because with petrolium prices sky-rocketing, it's going up fast and alot. I happened to think of this when I went to a dealership to buy a belt and got away with paying only about $5 more per 5 gallon bucket than I paid last year. I really expect it to get so high that it will be cheaper and worthwhile to go in and replace all the seals in everything!

Just tell him you changed out the fluid for HyGard. I know he won't believe you if you say that mixing the oil won't hurt anything... Typical oil snob... doesn't know that as long as it's slippery, about the right thickness, and made of dinosaur juice, it really doesn't matter what color the bucket is.

Compared to the amount of oil in the transmission, what little you'll get out of the cylinder isn't going to "contaminate" either brand of tractor, even if the oils were not compatible.

It has been many years since I worked at the Deere dealership. So this info could be outdated. In the 80's and 90's Hy-Gard and Hy-Trans were not compatible oils. However, what mixing you would get from sharing implements would be so minimal that you would never know. Besides, if you are actually changing your hydraulic oil as you should be it would never matter anyway. Which by the way, oil changes are very important to Deere's PS transmission, and having a long life.

As for refining the oil, at least for Deere, it used to come from Shell. 15w-40 PLus 50 engine oil for instance, was very similar the Shell Rotella T, however, in every oil sample test I ever sent in, the Deere oil always outperformed.

Hy guad was used in JD to keep the hydraulic brakes from chattering.

IH did not have that problem so the additive is not in Hy tran.

Hy guad is fine in a IH but Hy tran is not ok in JD.

Use hy guad in both and it will be fine, IH don't care.

Been swapping implements between red and green for years. Something bad should of happened if the oils were much different by now.

I use Hy-gard in all my Deere and IH tractors. Been doing it for 30 years and have yet to have a oil related break down.
