574 thermostat size/type

I have a 574 diesel that only operates at about 160 degrees f. I want to replace the thermostat with a new 180 degree f unit. Do I need to get a special one from a dealer or will a typical GM/Ford V8 type fit? Or should I just leave well enough alone?

Just go to any automotive parts store and buy a premium grade thermostat.I have used for years a 190- 195 degree thermostat. The reason I use a higher degree thermostat is because the cylinder wall doesn't get glazed up in the winter time. Your heat gauge will run just a little higher but this won't hurt anything.
Make sure your system is flushed good before you attempt to do anything.
