15-30 mag timing

Hello Guy"s.I just bought a 15-30 McCormick with an F4 Mag.I have spark the odd time but no fire. How do I check timing?
Thanks Gary

The easiest way is to remove the number one spark plug put your finger in the hole like a cork and turn the engine slowly till compression leaks past then you know you are coning up on one compression. then take a long thin screwdriver put itt in the hole and move the engine over carefully till th screwdriver stops coning up. thats should be TDC take cap off mag look where rotor is pointed should be at no 1 terminal. To play it safe remove all the spark plugs first. If the mag is way off while its on TDC at this point remove valve cover and acertain that both valves are closed. Then remove the two 1/4 inch fine thread bolts holding the mag drive together and rotate the mag untill the points are just starting to open with the rotor approaching the no one terminal. also the mag should be fully retarded during this adjustment. replace the bolts they will only line up in the correct holes usually either straight horizontal or vertical
