Wiring H light switch and ammeter

I know this has been covered in many different ways. I have searched and read everything i can find but either it won't sink in or i'm not finding what i need.

I'm trying to wire in a 4 position switch and ammeter. i have printed off bobs diagram #3. I seem to be confused about the cutout relay. is it the same as the VR?

Also from the diagram the filed wire is going from the field resistor on the switch to the field post on the gen. As mine is wired now (i have no light switch) field is comming from the VR to the field post on the gen. I have no lights yet so i figured i'd leave them open for now.

Also the ammeter (this is a used switch and ammeter) has 4 wires hooked to the right side post (looking at it from the back side bolts pointing towards you) and the left has one, wondering where all those wires went to?

Thanks in advance for any help

Now i get the ammeter to swing to the discharge side when not running and when the kill switch is on, but when it's running it stays on the discharge side. took the gen apart looks good, did the gen motor test and it spins fine. I can't figure out the jumping the bat post and the gen post yet from john t's troubleshooting guide.

R he field wire goimg to the sw was placed on the cut-out field post it shouldnt make any difference if you have it on the gen as long as you do have a wire from the field on the gen to the field on the cut-out. Only need one wire on the amp to the gen other side goes to 6v.

It's diffently not charging. I took the sw out of the program for now (I want to use it to power the lights when I get them). It's still 6volt positve ground.

I have a VR (I'm not really sure what a cutout is) and the F on the VR goes to F on the gen and the A on the VR goes to A on the gen the bat post on the VR goes to the ammeter on one side and power from the starting switch goes to the other side of the ammeter, with the kill switch on the same side the VR is connected to.

Also there is a load post on the VR that is empty. I guess i'm lost for now.

Thanks for your help Gene

I've tried everything I can find on this site to get it to charge. It sits at 2 discharge with the kill switch on and 4 discharge when it's running. Guess it's time to start replacing parts. Battery is new, battery cables are new, connections are clean as can be. gen runs in motor test. grounding F post does nothing. just frustrated at this point i guess.

Ok tried the motor test on the generator again and it doesn't turn now, it did a few weeks ago when i tried it but now it tries to move but doesn't. I tried to spin it by hand and it seems kinda stuck when power is givin to it, take power off and it spins ok.

I put new brushes and brass sleeve in the generator. Put on a brand new VR (6volt positive ground). Hit the kill switch and it moves towards negative ground start her up and it move more to the negative side. Tried motor test on gen and it spins (however it didn't seem to speed up when i removed the F grounded wire, but it was turning pretty fast either way). So inconclusion it didn't do anything more then it was before. I was wondering (grasping at straws here) would it make any difference if the wire comming from the ammeter to the VR is only a 12-14 gauge instead of the 10 gauge?

Also I have ohm'ed everything and everything seems to be making a good ground generator, VR, even ammeter case.

Ok just to let folks know. I took the gen to a shop and had a guy look at it and he said it wasn't charging a bit on first test, so he polished the armature and then tested it and it was running fine. Brought it home tonight and fired it up and it was pulling alomst 19 on the positive side of the gauge (battery was a bit low from working on this problem). One problem solved. Thanks for any and all responces. By the way it cost me 5 dollars to have him look at it and fix it.
