T/A Clutch - Farmall 460

Hugh will probably be right on top of this question :D , but open to anyone!
I know these tractors have had numerous recalls and plagued with problems, but mine still seems to be working fine, I think?....
When parked down a hill (tractor off, any gear, T/A engaged -handle back), the clutch appears to slip and the tractor rolls forward. Stops rolling immediately when moving T/A handle to Drive (Forward). Transversely, when parked up a hill same condition (tractor off, any gear, T/A engaged -handle back) it doesn't roll.
It works great in the field. It will hold while pulling a disc and holds while climbing hills, etc.
I just need to know if I should start budgeting for a new T/A.

Ctry Boy: Sounds quite normal, don't let it free wheel, shift it quick. IH and indeed most experts never gave special attention to using TA in 5th gear or road gears, however I like to throttle back as I shift up to help reduce drivetrain shock. And do the reverse during downshifting. This is quite important with the newer type TA that don't freewheel. Basically when you up to slow truck speed, treat it like a truck.

Last and probably most important is have an operators manual. They contain excellent advice on adjustment. Keep it adjusted by the book and to the letter. Close does not count with these, not even a little bit.

The 460 wasn't plague with recalls and problems that I know of. This one here was bought new in 61 by my father.

When it burned up last year in this fire it still was all orginal except for the seat cushions and the clutch. The clutch only lasted 46 years and 11,000 hours and was replaced in 2006. The gas engine,TA, and rear end have never been opened up.

IaGary,

Thats a sad picture to see, I'm sorry for the loss. Mine was originally bought new by my grandfather in 1959. It's the only tractor I know, Except the 886 and 966 that was sold when we got out of farming. Now that I have some land of my own, I'm using it for more field work instead of feedlot. And the kicker of the deal is, I know all the service was done at the dealer, so I was able to have the original dealer provide me with all the prior service records for the tractor. Dealer installed Swartz WFE, One rebuild in 1976 with new tach & repainted, re-welded broken drawbar, 2 rear & 3 front tires, generator, starter and thats it.
