Super A plugs

Everyone, it seems has a different opinion about the best brand of spark plug. Some like Champion; some like Autolite. I am going to try some Autolites out of curiosity, but have never used them before. I have been using Champion D18Y with no problems. mike

There was a post here once where a mechanic was telling the writer that Autolites fired much more easily and consistently, (though I can't recall why) and to prove his point, told him to stick one Champion in the cylinder of his choice where the mechanic wouldn't know where it was, and the mechanic was able to tell him which cylinder, based on only looking at his oscilloscope.
FWIW.
I've used Champions without any apparent problem, but since I read that post, I switched.
For no apparent reason. LOL

Always a good question.

Pick your brand, then pick your plug. As a general rule of thumb, the lighter/less you're gonna work it, the hotter the plug you want. I've got Autolite 388s (hottest) in my pride and joy BN, as I don't expect it will ever work too hard again. My SuperC gets a work out when she runs, and I've got 386s (just hot) and they work fine. I don't know the numbers on the cooler Autolites.

On the Champion side, there's D15 (not so hot) and moving up D18, D21 and D23 (hottest and equivalent to the Autolite 388). There may even be a D16 in there, I'm not sure.

Depending on when yourtractor was made, they might have originally recommended a D15, which would have been for a working tractor on the higher octane gas that was called "regular" in those days. With today's gas, I wouldn't want to go to anything in the Champion series than a D18 or its equivalent in another brand.

That said, just remember less work = hotter plug. Any good counter guy will know what you're talking about.

I use Champion D18Y in my 1943 H and those plugs work excellent. They will also work in your Super A. I've always used Champions and have never had any problems, but later I switched to Autolite because I've heard on here that they were supposed to be "much better than Champions". I put Autolites in my H and it ran good for a month or two, then 2 plugs went bad at the same time and were not firing. I'm not going to say "don't use Autolites", I'm just saying I've had better luck with Champions than Autolites.

My 1966 140 came new with Champion D18Y's and I have never used anything else. Never had a single cylinder misfiring due to a failed plug. Tractor runs great with them. I see no reason I should try something else.
