I know this is off subject. I part time drive a grain truck for a friend and it is an 87 eagle. I want to put a radio in it but the one that is in there has some kind of star type screw. What is funny is the star part is out not in. Anybody have an idea as to where to get the tool to get these out? The owner has warned against drilling them out:) Thanks in advance!!

Any good auto parts store will have those TORX sockets and drivers. You can buy a complete set or buy just the one you need.

No,If I read this right you are saying the "star" is sticking out so to speak. I know there is a more appropriate word for this. It is not like an indented or inset hole in a Torx socket. Am I understanding this correctly?

I've never encountered what you're describing, but if I understand you correctly you should be able to make your own driver from a Torx screw. Just find one with the right size head, tightly lock the threaded end in a pair of Vise Grips, and use the assembly as you would a nut driver.

On the other hand, you may be describing a tamper-resistant Torx screw. These have the normal recessed Torx socket but also a small rod in the center of the hole. The rod prevents the insertion of a regular Torx driver. If this is what you're facing, you can buy special bits from tool or electronics suppliers.

Gene you are correct. This screw sticks out it is not like torx screw. It is a strange thing for sure. It is the opposite of a torx.

Sorry everbody I see what you are saying!! I thought torx were only used as a driver type not a socket. This new stuff is troubling sometime. Thanks for all of the help!

Yeah, I've heard it called inverted torx. Your local auto parts store or Sears should be able to hook you up.

Torx fasteners come in both internal and external, or male and female, however you want to describe it, but it is still a Torx.

The owner said not to drill them out , he may not realy want ya foolin with it . Yrs. ago I drove differant trucks and tractors without working radios . I got a small plastic toolbox and mounted a radio and speaker inside with long power leads to hook to the antenna , ground and the battery . Worked good and no problem to move from one to the other and did`nt take somebody else`s stuff apart .

Thats a special socket for taking the radio out.I worked at a Navistar dealer for 20 years,I bought the socket from snap-on.
