584 hydraulics sometimes quit

My 584 3 pt hitch and remotes may quit working while mowing or plowing, etc. and then return after several minutes even though I continue to use the tractor. The steering and brakes are not affected at all. This has happened before and I cut the tractor off and came back in about 30 minutes and all was fine. Yesterday it quit lifting while using a disc mower and neither the lift or remotes worked but I was able to continue mowing. About 10 minutes later the lift came up(I had moved the handle and left it at top of quadrant) and all was fine while I mowed for an additional hour. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? A local shop says I need a new pump which he will be happy to install but I can't see that being the problem. I wonder about a sticky valve and have thought about trying some automatic transmission shift conditioner or similar fluid. The filter and fluid have been changed recently.

Did you use hy tran or equivelent? If not your brake disc could be wearing and clogging the filter with lining debris. I have had this happen to me before.

Hi, could be a sticky valve in the MCV valve. The standard hydraulic pump is about 12 gpm. The MCV splits the 12 gpm into 3 gpm for PS, PB and oil cooler, the remaining 9 gpm go to 3pt & remotes. If the splitter valve sticks open then all 12 gpm go through the PS, PB and oil cooler circuit. Make sure that you have plenty of hydraulic fluid in the transmission, can over fill by 5 gals.

Next time the problem occurs turn the steering wheel one way or the other to the max until you hear the hydraulic relief valve buzz. Sometimes this will dislodge dirt or stuck MCV valves.
