Magnetos, coil or condenser

What is most likley to cause rough running when hot ? The coil or condenser? Runs great cold, very rough when real hot. As usual thanks to all who would care to comment.
 
Could really be both but most likley the coil. however i would replace both when you change the coil, beacuse the condensor is under the coil. and the condensor only cost $5 bought one last weekend. Coils are $40-$50

Im pretty much with Andrew, Id say the condensor orrrrrrr coil orrrrrrrrr burned carboned points. Since cleaning n buffing the points (or replace if badly burned or pitted) and replacing the condensor is so relatively cheap, Id just try that first n see what happens. This assumes the problem is ignition related since thats where you seem to be thinking??????????

A bad condenser shows up most of the time in 5-10 minutes a coil about 30-60 minutes. But if it where me I would try the condenser because it cost about $5 but the coil will be more like $50

The other advice is all good, but I got wonderin' when you said "real" hot. Before you have to pull the mag to get the condensor out, you might want to check whle the mag is just loose to make sure it's timed right. If you've got the spark too far advanced she'll run hot enough to run poorly and overheat.

Usually, when a condenser goes, it goes - period. Engine quits. When a coil goes, it goes when it gets hot and starts to break down.... popping, sputtering, missing, then quits. But, sure, why not try the $5 part before the more expensive one? I cannot disagree with that logic.... mike
