thanksH one more ?

just wanta thank every body, got the 1941 family H running today ( sat for 20 yrs, did valve job)...i let it run for about 20 minutes( ran out of gas) oil pressure was 50psi at idle 60 psi more throttle,( i thought that was good ,i dont think its ever been apart before, had inch and a half of crud in oil pan) QUESTION IS should i retoqure head now or run it some more???
 
Run it up to a runnin' temp before retorquing.

I don't have enough experience with the motor in the H to say for sure but, if it's anything like the 133s/123/ it's quite cold-natured and will take some time to warm up. You can speed the process along by running her for an hour under some kind of load. If you can't put that together, you can also run it with the radiator covered with something like a plastic trash bag large enough to cover the grill (the vacuum of the fan will hold it very nicely in place.)

In either case, you want to run it until it's not especially comfortable to hold your hand against the crankcase (with the water jacket behind it). The head will heat up sooner, but it's important to get the crankcase warm as well. That's working temperature.

But your question raises a question that I've never heard a good answer to, but then I'm not sure I ever asked). Should you retorque while it's hot, or wait for it to cool and retorque?
 
thanks but i wasnt asking about retroqueing hot, just wanted to know if running it for 20 mintues is long enought? i think ill start it again tomorrow and let it run for 1/2 hr. think i read somewhere run for 1 hr and retorque head
 
Retorquing hot or cold is a separate question, one of my own that I've been meaning for some time to ask, and I apologize if it seemed I was hijacking your thread.

What is important is to run your motor until it's hot on the crankcase as well as the head, as I described, before retorquing. That's the important part. Two half-hour runs don't achieve the same thing. You need to get it up to working temp. It might take a one-hour run. It could take less if you block off the grill, but you need to warm it up to that point before retorquing. The point of the exercise is that anything that might stretch out or shift in anyway (all things that affect or are affected by the tension that you are "setting" with the torque) need to be heated up to the pint that they will find their natural positions, which is the right point to tighten them down for regular running.
 
thanks again i did check oil and it was only luke warm.was just reading some old stuff on this subject and one guy told someone ( they had somesota leak) he should of retoruqed WARM!!!!
