Farmall H 12 volt conversion

I have a Farmall H and I would like to convert the ignition from a 6 volt system to a 12 volt. I am using the directions and parts list from this web site as my guide. My tractor has a magneto. I would like to know if I can continue to use my magneto with a 12 volt system or will I need to buy a new distributor?
 
The magneto makes it's own current and has NOTHING to do with the choice of voltage for the starting/charging/lighting circuit.

The IMPORTANT thing is to realize the wire from the mag is a "kill wire"... gets shorted to ground to "kill" the engine, and is NEVER to be connected to battery voltage!
 
Bob abd NDS are correct, leave the Ignition system as is. You will find no wires going from the panel button. leave it this way when changing the amp meter polarity, and other wiring. JimN
 
As the others have said but because of having a mag you do have one problem that is easy to fix. You either need to add a switch to your system so as to turn on the alternator or it will run your battery down. The last one I did that had a mag I put in an oil pressure switch so as soon as the engine started it would switch the excite on the alternator on and when you shut the engine off it would then turn it off. Very simple to set up and cost about $10

Thanks for the information. Could you provide additional instructions about how to install an oil pressure switch to excite the alternator?
 
Any good auto parts store will sell a pressure switch then then just put in a T where the oil line goes to the gauge. Then hook one end to the battery and the other to the alternator #1 post and you have it set up
 
Youll need a Normally Open OP switch, not just any Op switch will work. Hook the wire from you alternator to one side, then the other side of the switch needs to go to the amp gauge, then to the battery. I have several like that.
