Electric funny stuff

I started my SC today. The Ammeter read about 7 to 10 while I was driving it. When I parked it the needle was pegged on 20+
I got my meter and tested the alternator. It said 14.47 or something like that. I tested the battery ends and the meter was dancing all over the place so fast I could not read it. I tried at the battery post, the starter post, the coil. The only place I could get a constant reading was the alternator. Everything else was jumping around.
Before today the Ammeter would go up to 10 and run there for a few minutes and back off to 2 or 3. Something is different and I am worried that the alternator is stuck on high and not comming down. Ron

If you are using a DMM, the meter is probably reading noise and not true volts.
Using an analog with a needle, is probably best.
14.4 volts is correct, so the issue may be a short sircuit somewhere, or a battery going bad.
Test the battery cell specific gravity if possible.
Use an analog meter, or a fluke (expensive) DMM.

The battery is a year old and I don't think it has 20 running hours on it.
I have access to a fluke, so I will try it. How do I "Test the battery cell specific gravity if possible" ?
I am not much of a mechanic, and I don't know the lingo, sorry. Ron

You need a hydrometer to test the specific gravity. It looks like a medicine dropper. You pop of the cap on the battery and pull up some of the acid into the hydrometer. It has four balls in it. If all the balls float, it is fully charged. Three balls is 3/4 and so on. You have to test each cell. Be careful not to get acid on you.

NAPA has this one for $1.29 Item # BK 5001140

I put a better tester on it today. I had 14.51 V reved up. If I slowed it down to a put, put it had 13.65
I think JimN, was right about my meter seeing the "noise"
Thanks, Ron
