The battery box on my H has long slots that allow the box to slide out from underneath the fuel tank for battery removal. What type and size of bolt is used to fasten the box to the bracket on the tractor frame? I assume it must be a carriage bolt, and that the square shank beneath the head fits in the slot to prevent the bolt from turning when being tightened. Is this correct, or did IH use some other special fastener? If correct, what size bolt is required?

Thanks for the help.

Dave,

If I use a square head bolt sized to fit the slot, how do I get clamping force to hold the box in position?

I used elevator bolts and ground the sides of the heads down until they fit in the slots in the bottom of the battery box.

3/8" refers to the diameter of the threaded portion. The head is 9/16" across the flats. I welded a 1/2" tab to one side of the heads to be sure that would not turn.
